The oral contraceptive pill contains chemicals similar to the human hormones progesterone and oestrogen. These two hormones, in the correct concentrations, inhibit hormones that are responsible for ovulation - the release of the ovum from the ovary. If no egg is released, then fertilisation and pregnancy cannot occur.
